Diego was born and raised in Pereira, Colombia. He arrived in the United States at the age of eight and quickly became obsessed with everything from Ninja Turtles and GI Joe to Thundercats and Transformers. The US introduced Diego to a whole new world of sci-fi that he didn’t have access to growing up in Colombia. When he reached middle school, he discovered the magic of spending entire days at the comic shop, arcades, and movies — all conveniently located next to each other at his favorite spot in Miami.
Diego was always somewhat of a loner and spent a lot of time at home alone. In true only-child fashion, he delved deep into Marvel comics, Star Wars, and various other fantasy worlds. They became his escape, his companions, and in many cases, his teachers. Not having grown up with his father, Diego had to experience it all on his own and feed his obsession independently. Thus, a geek was born!
Raising the Next Geek Generation
But Diego wouldn’t have to enjoy geekdom alone forever. Enter Joshua. It should come as no surprise that some of Joshua’s first words were the names of the superheroes he saw his dad reading about, watching, and geeking out over in every way. It wasn’t long before geeky conversations began between the two of them. Sci-fi stories and characters have been a bond between Diego and his son Joshua on multiple levels. Of course, they enjoy it as entertainment, but their geeky talks have sparked everything from life lessons to philosophical debates.
It’s the spirit of those genuine, geeky talks with his son that drove Diego to propose the idea of turning their discussions into a podcast. And that’s how Geekology 101 was born!
